Achieving true independence relies on a network of dedicated funding initiatives and human resources, ranging from global sponsorships to local agricultural projects.

The Power of Global Connection: Distance Child Sponsorship

The Distance Child Sponsorship programme is currently the vital force sustaining our educational mission. Launched in 2005 by Federico Palumbo in the wake of the devastating tsunami, the initiative initially aided 200 children in the affected coastal villages.

Today, it is the lifeblood for the children living at Island of Hope and the students attending Ave Maria School, assisting around 35 young individuals. Finding backers is a continuous journey, and at present, about 50 more students are waiting to be matched with a sponsor to secure their educational path and protect them from child labour. To bridge this gap, we work closely with our long-term partner, the Italian non-profit organisation Energia per i Diritti Umani APS, to connect these children with advocates around the world.

This programme is more than just financial aid; it is a bond of solidarity. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor can guarantee a child free access to education, learning materials, basic healthcare, and a balanced diet. Importantly, a portion of this contribution is invested in community projects, ensuring that the child’s entire village benefits from shared opportunities. It is a highly transparent and personal journey: sponsors receive photos, drawings, and regular updates on the child’s academic progress, creating a direct connection that gives a concrete face to international solidarity.

Mariamma, Yuvasri, Anthony Vinil Arasu and Mubika showing the drawings they made for their sponsors (photos by Francesca Pia De Rosa)

A Story of Empowerment: Esakkiammal’s Journey

A shining example of how Distance Child Sponsorship creates lasting change is Esakkiammal. Welcomed into Island of Hope in 2006 after losing her parents, she faced significant challenges early in life. However, with the steady support of her sponsor, she was given the stability and the opportunity to focus entirely on her education.

She attended school while living at the children’s home, successfully completed her Higher Secondary education, and went on to pursue a medical nursing course. Through her own hard work and the consistent backing she received, Esakkiammal officially became a nurse in 2012. Today, she is a senior nurse at Sankar Hospital in Authoor, self-reliant.

She has built a beautiful, independent life with her husband, and most importantly, she is now able to offer her children a future free from the hardships she once faced. Her journey is a testament to how a continuous commitment can empower an individual to break the cycle of poverty for generations to come.

Esakkiammal and her family (photos by Esakkiammal)

The Coconut Farm Project

To reduce our reliance on external funding and generate internal resources, AID India owns a large piece of land dedicated to agriculture. In 2021, thanks to the vital support of the Italian NGO Radici Globali and Mrs. Johnnie Antony from the USA, we officially launched our coconut farm project. Today, the site boasts over 800 thriving trees.

While currently only about 40 of these young trees have matured enough to bear fruit, they are already creating a beautiful cycle of sustainability: a portion of this initial harvest is sent directly to Island of Hope to provide fresh food for the children, while the surplus is sold at the local Sathankulam market. Here, the coconuts are transformed into valuable goods like oil, coconut water, and coir ropes, beginning to provide a steady source of income.

Managed by our dedicated AID India staff, this agricultural project has immense potential. Because we are still waiting for hundreds of trees to reach their yielding age, our absolute priority is to nurture them and make the cultivation as eco-friendly as possible.

Inspired by a highly efficient drip irrigation model used at a neighbouring farm, our goal is to implement a similar water-saving system across our entire land. To build this vital network and ensure constant hydration without wasting precious resources, we need an investment of approximately 200,000 rupees (approx. €2,000). We are also looking to properly fence the area and introduce a leaf-processing machine, costing around 100,000 rupees (approx. €1,000), that will turn dry coconut leaves into organic fertiliser, making the farm a truly zero-waste ecosystem.

Water-saving drip irrigation system in coconut farm (photo by Francesca Pia De Rosa)

Beyond Agriculture: Empowerment and Infrastructure

Sustainability goes beyond agriculture; it is deeply rooted in social and structural growth. We are actively expanding our microcredit programme into a broader community empowerment initiative. By organising local assemblies, we provide a safe space where people can gather, discuss their civil rights, and learn how to navigate the banking system and secure fair loans independently.

At the same time, we are always looking to upgrade our school infrastructure. Our next vision for Ave Maria School is to replace the traditional shared wooden and metal benches with individual desks and chairs for every student, fostering a more focused and modern learning environment. We hope to start this transition by funding our first 100 desk sets.

Students deeply focused during class on shared wooden and metal benches (photo by Federico Perruolo)

The Power of Human Capital: Volunteering

Financial aid is crucial, but human connection and hands-on support are equally vital resources for our ecosystem. Volunteers who travel to join us become an integral part of our daily mission.

To ensure a safe, welcoming, and truly immersive experience, international volunteers are hosted in dedicated accommodation right on the Ave Maria School campus. With three authentic local meals guaranteed every day and continuous support from our team, volunteers can focus entirely on sharing their skills, time, and energy with the children and the community.

Join Our Mission

Every initiative we run is a step towards true self-reliance, but to get there, we need the soil in which our independence can grow.
