The success story of Saraswathi

This is Saraswathi. Since a few years, she is one of the basket makers of her village Gandinagar. Grama Vasantham, the micro credit program of AID INDIA provided a loan to the Self Help group consisting of 15 people where she is part of. Before she started her small business, Saraswathi lived in a very poor situation. She is not educated and has always worked as a child laborer during her youth. Her husband is a coolie, and his irregular and small income was not sufficient to provide for the household of 4 people. Because of the poor economical situation Saraswathi and her husband could not send their youngest child to school, there was no money for savings and often there was not enough food. Their son had to work as a coolie to raise some extra money for the family.

Because of the micro credit program Saraswathi’s life is much brighter today than before. She provides 50 rupees a day to the family income. There is enough food and to the great relieve of the parents, their son can go to school! Saraswathi feels much more secure about the future and is very proud of herself as she is elected to be the president of her Self Help Group!
